MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY FENCERS TEST THEIR METTLE IN ATLANTIC TOURNAMENT

University team ranks gold and bronze against Atlantic fencers

Fencers from the Memorial University Fencing Club competed at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Shield on March 5-6 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The team proudly returned home with medals and newfound respect for their abilities.

Alexander Hamilton, a 3rd year Psychology student at Memorial University took gold in Novice Epee and bronze in Open Foil and Novice Sabre. He ranked exceptionally well for his first tournament outside of Newfoundland. Although happy with how he competed, Hamilton was pleased with the level of competition and how it “really tested [his] abilities as a fencer”.

“It was a great time, everyone there brought something new to the table that I don't normally experience and that's always the best part of any competition” he commented.

For Callum Carmichael, a 2nd year Russian major, it was his second time competing at the UNB Shield. His experience paid off as he battled back from an 11-9 lead against him in the Under 20 Epee finals to win gold. In Open Foil he tied with teammate Hamilton for bronze. Ciaran Kelly, 4th year biology major at Memorial University, won bronze in Open Epee and ranked 5th in Open Foil.

The team had been training hard weeks leading up the tournament and they were delighted at how it paid off. “I felt as prepared as possible. All the coaches in the club gave all the training we could handle to give us an edge throughout the competition.” says Hamilton.

For athletes from such a small sporting community in Newfoundland, the fencers were proud to rank so well for their university and the province.

“I think that we were very successful as a team and we showed that fencers from Newfoundland are to be taken seriously as opponents and is indicative of the quality of our training.” commented Kelly.

Already the fencers are gearing up to return to the tournament next year with hopes of bringing a larger team.

The Memorial University Fencing Club has been teaching university students to fence for 10 years and is an integral part of promoting the sport in the province.
